Cost Accountant Responsibilities:

Reporting to and working closely with the Finance Director

Conducting ongoing process constraint analyses

Reporting on margins by product and division, periodic variances and their causes, focusing on spending variances

Working closely with managers and operational staff to ensure products have accurate standard costs, instructions and bills of material

Implementing change management protocols for the updating of costs

Managing the product profitability analysis

Providing costs and indicative selling prices for new products

Comparing standard costs to current costs and evaluate impact

Preparing and reconciling sales and gross profit analyses

Liaising with the sales department to understand differences to forecast and budget

Analysing labour efficiency

Providing breakdown of material usage variances to identify improvements in manufacturing processes

Calculating costs for new products taking into account material cost, labour costs and relevant overheads

Updating costings of existing products to account for changes in currency exchange rates, staff pay, supplier prices and methods

Key involvement in the annual budgetary process, calculating labour and overhead absorption rates to be used for the forthcoming year

Completing month end stock valuations and co-ordinating month/year end stocktakes

Ongoing analysis of process constraints, target costing projects, margin analysis and tracing costs back to underlying activities

Constructing and monitoring data accumulation systems needed to provide an appropriate level of costing information to management.

Creating and reviewing controls needed for data accumulation and reporting systems.

Coordinating physical inventory counts and cycle counts and investigating cycle counting variances

Updating standard costs in the bill of materials

Reviewing standard and actual costs for inaccuracies

Validating cost of goods sold as part of month-end close

Revising the reserve of obsolete inventory as needed

Accumulating and applying overhead costs as required by generally accepted accounting principles

Cost Accountant Requirements:

Proven work experience as a Cost Accountant, Cost Analyst, Accountant or similar role.

Thorough knowledge of accounting procedures

In-depth understanding of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP)

Excellent analytical skills with an attention to detail

Strong time management skills

Integrity, with an ability to handle confidential information
